Built for the Day You Can't Be There

Every feature in DeadSwitch exists to make sure your family isn't left scrambling when they need your information most.

The Encrypted Vault

Your vault lives on a USB drive -- not in the cloud. It runs without installation on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Plug it in, enter your master password, and you're in. Unplug it, and there's no trace left on the host machine.

Store anything across 8 categories: passwords, financial accounts, crypto wallets, documents, insurance policies, medical information, legal documents, and personal messages. Each category has purpose-built forms so nothing gets missed.

Encryption: AES-256-GCM-SIV with Argon2id key derivation. Database: SQLCipher. Zero data stored on host.

Security Model

DeadSwitch uses a zero-knowledge architecture. Our servers never see your vault contents. We offer 4 configurable security modes so you can choose the tradeoff between convenience and maximum security:

  • 1. Local-only: Encryption key exists only on the USB. Maximum security, but lose the USB and you lose everything.
  • 2. Cloud-stored: Encrypted key backup on our server. Recoverable if you lose the USB, but requires trusting our infrastructure.
  • 3. Key-split: Key is split between USB and server. Neither alone can unlock the vault. Recommended for dead man's switch users.
  • 4. Hybrid: Key-split with an additional encrypted backup. Most resilient against both USB loss and server compromise.

Dead Man's Switch

Configure a check-in interval: every 7, 14, or 30 days. We send a simple "Are you there?" email or SMS. Click the link to confirm you're alive. That's it.

If you miss check-ins, the system escalates gradually: reminders on all channels, then urgent warnings, then a grace period (48-72 hours). You can cancel at any stage. Only after the full grace period expires with no response does the system trigger and deliver your vault keys to your beneficiaries.

The state machine is database-driven -- no in-memory timers. Server restarts lose no state. Every transition is logged.

Beneficiary System

You decide who gets what. Assign specific vault items to specific beneficiaries. Your spouse gets the financial accounts and passwords. Your children get the personal messages and video recordings. Your business partner gets the crypto wallets.

Each beneficiary gets a printable emergency card with their unique secret code and step-by-step instructions. When the switch triggers, they receive a compassionate email designed for grieving, non-technical people -- clear steps, no jargon, no alarm.

Video & Audio Messages

Record goodbye messages for the people you love. A video to your spouse. An audio message to your children. A note to your best friend. These aren't just data -- they're the most personal thing you can leave behind.

All media files are encrypted with XChaCha20-Poly1305 and stored directly on the USB drive. They're assigned per beneficiary, so each person sees only the messages meant for them. Up to 150MB per recording (about 10 minutes of video).
